Art in the Shops 2012
For two weeks during the Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival, the shop keepers in the town generously donate some of their window and wall space to display the work of local artists.
We have artists that have been displaying their art since the festival began and some new and upcoming talents. From oil and acrylic paintings, photography to ceramic sculptures, the township of Thirroul is magically transformed into a wonderful art gallery.
Last year, 2011 was the second year to have a competition just for the Art in the Shop competitors. Due to its great success and the buzz that it brings to township once again the competition is on to find the ‘Best Artwork’; Painting or Sculpture display. The artwork will be placed on Friday 24th March and displayed till the 9th April and the judging will take place on Saturday 25th by independent artist judges.
The 2011 winner was long time resident of Thirroul. The excellent work was by Jeff Body, located in the Thirroul Central Chemist in Anita’s Theatre named ‘To wish impossible things’. Highly commended awards went to Robyn Sharp in Travelworld Thirroul and Christine Hill in The Horizon Credit Union.
The 2010 winner was the wonderful painting by Jody Trevor of her dog named Rosie, which was located in her own fashion boutique named Liiluu.
Each year we intend to have a different judge who will be an artist themselves so they have the same affinity with the expression of creating art, as it is such a personal and emotional experience.
The Art in the Shops exhibition is a great way to view work of the most creative artists that live in this seaside community, as the majority of those involved live and create their art here in the northern suburbs. This year we have over 70 stores exhibiting artists work and with many new stores both north and south, it’s a great chance to explore this lovely seaside town.
The Art in the Shops exhibition includes both the North side of Thirroul including Anita’s Theatre, Plaza and down Bath Street. South side of Thirroul starting at ‘Dignam Real Estate’ through to the new Library and along Railway Parade.
The works can be viewed from the 24th of March to the 9th of April, that’s one week either side of the main festival. So come and explore the township of Thirroul, and enjoy the colour and vibrancy of this free art exhibition.
